Becoming a mother is undoubtedly one of life’s most transformative experiences. Suddenly, you find yourself navigating a labyrinth of responsibilities, emotions, and decisions you never even knew existed. And if you’re a working Mum, the journey becomes even more complex, with layers of guilt, exhaustion, and constant self-doubt.
What ‘should’ we be doing…
Guilt is perhaps one of the heaviest burdens carried by working mothers. It’s the feeling of being torn between advancing in your career and being there for your children. The incessant questioning of whether you’re making the right choices—full-time, part-time, work from home—while grappling with the fear of missing out on precious moments with your family.
Then there’s the monumental task of summoning the energy and mental fortitude to excel both at work and at home. The pursuit of perfection becomes an unattainable goal, yet the pressure to do it all remains ever-present.
At work, being recognised by your name and acknowledged for your contributions brings a sense of validation and fulfillment. It’s a reminder of your identity beyond the realm of motherhood.
Conversely, at home, being addressed as “Mummy” and witnessing your children flourish fills your heart with immeasurable joy. It’s in these moments that you feel a sense of completeness, despite the constant juggling act that defines your life.
Simple pleasures like savouring a hot cup of coffee or enjoying an uninterrupted lunch break become cherished luxuries amidst the chaos of daily life.
WHO AM I?
The most daunting aspect of navigating working motherhood is the sensation of being torn apart—pulled in numerous directions while struggling to maintain a sense of wholeness. Balancing career aspirations with maternal responsibilities is a constant challenge, often appearing insurmountable. Yet, envision a reality where we aren’t fragmented, but instead integrated, where work and family life harmonize effortlessly. How do we reach such a state? Is it through entrepreneurship? Is it finding employment with flexible policies? Or does the key lie within ourselves, within our mindset? There may not be a definitive answer, but it’s certainly worth contemplating.
Despite the overwhelming challenges, there’s a resilience that defines all mothers—a resilience born out of love, determination, and an unwavering commitment to both career (if you’re working) and family.
In the end, while the journey of working motherhood may be fraught with obstacles and uncertainties, it’s also a journey marked by profound moments of growth, love, and unparalleled strength. And for every tear shed and every hurdle overcome, there’s a quiet reassurance that, yes, you are indeed doing a good job.
